Apparently, smiling is not a sufficient amount of acknowledgement.
When I'm walking, and I see someone I know - say, from about five to seven metres away. I see them, they see me. I smile at about the three metre mark, they say hi to me at the half metre mark, which leaves me half a metre's time to say hi back. It's really not enough time, which makes things horribly awkward when I get caught in a "erh-hh--hi--".
It may sound like a very petty rant, but it's a real life issue, guys.
