I started the habit pretty young, biting everything off...till it really hurt, not bled - because blood is scary. I then kicked the habit for a year or two after my mother put that bitter stuff on my nails. I must admit though that I sometimes bit my nails and spat out the bitter stuff. A year or so later, it all started again and now it's kind of an on-and-off thing.
It's pretty hard trying to pin point a reason why I, let alone everyone else does this. From a bit of Googling, I found out that there are many theories behind it, from dependency developed from thumb-sucking as child (I never did that apparently, heh), to stress, boredom or even comfort. I suppose that's what all habits are based on, one of those three things.
I never seem to round off anything I say, so I'll just conclude that I think that I bite my nails for all of those three reasons, and maybe some others which you will never know about. And if you suffer from this horrible habit as well, maybe a small, minuscule amount of light has been shed upon the topic.
