"We got our green hats at the last cross-training of term. The older girls who had already been in seniors for a year presented them to us, but not in some fancy ceremony. They just grabbed handfuls and gave them to us eager young ones. It was an exciting moment nonetheless. They were brand-new in their boxes and boy, were they vibrant! The older girls’ hats had all faded to a light, dull green, but ours were a sickly shade of blue-green which we all hoped would fade quickly. We then celebrated the start of the new rowing season with pancakes and muffins, real healthy rower food. I once heard some coaches saying how it’s a funny tradition at MLC, you can always tell apart the older senior girls from the younger ones based on how faded their hats are."
